Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik has inaugurated a special migrant labour help desk in Hyderabad through video conferencing on the occasion of International Labour Day. While, Telangana's Housing and Labour Minister, N. Narasimha Reddy has shown their cooperation by agreeing upon the setting up of the facility.
These help desks are to provide necessary assistance and protection to the migrant labourers who go out of Odisha in search of better wages. Consequently, it prevents the migrant workers being harassed or exploited by the contractors and employers of other states.
As per the official sources, the state government has planned to set up such help desks in four more states - Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
In addition to it, the government has taken the initiative of constructing transit homes at 21 places in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Rourkela and Sambalpur cities apart from Dhenakal, Angul, Paradip, Jharsuguda and Jajpur towns to accommodate 1,700 construction workers.
The objectives behind the collaboration between the State government and Tata Trusts is to introduce registration of migrant workmen, and support development of database for welfare of migrant workers.
